Work has started on the construction of a major new hotel and retail development in Stoke Gifford.

Built by Bristol-based Beard Construction and developed by Bristol-based Baylis Estates, the multi-million pound project will see the construction of a Premier Inn, Beefeater restaurant, Aldi supermarket and a Costa Coffee drive-through on land at Fox Den Road, behind the existing Sainsbury’s store.

Planning permission for the development was granted in April 2021 and preparatory work, including the felling of trees around the 4-acre site, took place in January 2022.

Groundworks are now under way and the project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2024.

The development will see the delivery of a five-storey, 103-bedroom hotel and the shell and core of the Aldi superstore and Costa Coffee drive-through – as well as associated infrastructure and hard and soft landscaping, including a ‘pocket park’ and public art.

Piling for the hotel’s concrete frame has been completed and work on the foundations started this month (December 2022). Gas, water and electricity supplies will be brought to the site and retaining walls will be built to support the existing road while the area is excavated.

The hotel and restaurant will meet the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard for environmental and sustainability quality. The significant project relies on close collaboration across multiple construction disciplines – the design work has been carried out by Bristol-based Stride Treglown, project management is by JLL, the Waterman Group is carrying out the structural engineering, Hoare Lea is the mechanical & electrical consultant and RLB the cost consultant.

Beard constructed another landmark project nearby in 2021 for Baylis Estates – the 1,300-seater, Planet Ice rink at The Venue leisure park at Cribbs Causeway.

Beard Bristol director Matt Cooper said:

“We are very pleased to be delivering another significant, high-profile development for Baylis Estates. This project which will bring further accommodation, leisure and retail facilities to a thriving and fast-developing area of Bristol.”

“Beard’s focus on quality of service and delivery, on maintaining good relationships with customers, contractors and the supply chain, as well as our experience in delivering prominent projects on greenfield sites will see us in good stead during this development.”

The granted planning consent also includes an additional ‘multi-use building’ which could potentially be constructed at a later date on the site of the pocket park.
