Wessex Water’s very own paw patrol detected 86 precious newts in Harry Stoke before new pipes were laid underground. Springer spaniel Freya and springer-cocker Newky (pictured above) sniffed out the amphibians, which were safely relocated under licence by Natural England prior to work starting on the scheme.

Councillors and residents have expressed frustration at the lack of progress being made in the police investigation into a suspected arson attack which destroyed children’s play equipment in Meade Park. The parish council is now looking at installing CCTV cameras in the park and has opened a public consultation on options for replacing the destroyed play equipment.

South Glos Council’s Sort It recycling centre in Station Road, Little Stoke, is set to reopen on Monday (31st July) as a consequence of industrial action being “suspended”. The site has been temporarily closed since Monday 26th June, with the council saying this was necessary “due to the reduced workforce”. The council is warning that the site might be forced to close early if long queues form.

South Gloucestershire Council has voted unanimously to oppose the proposed mass closure of railway station ticket offices, including the one at Parkway Station. GWR, which is consulting the public until Wednesday 26th July, has said staff would move onto concourses and platforms to be better placed to help customers and give travel advice, as well as continuing to sell tickets.

After securing promotion to the Gloucestershire County League for the first time last year, the first team have put in a solid first season, finishing in 7th place. A large wooden play fort in Meade Park, Stoke Gifford, which had been renewed at a cost of almost £30,000 less than two years ago, has been destroyed by fire. A fire service report says the cause of the incident is “thought to have been deliberate ignition”. The parish council says it intends to replace the facility “as quickly as possible”.

Pupils, parents, guardians, carers, teachers and staff of the school took part in two walking buses on Thursday 18th May, that began at Crest Nicholson’s Highbrook View and Brooklands Park developments in Harry Stoke.

Plans to build a large student accommodation block on a vacant plot within a Stoke Gifford retail park have moved a step forward with the submission of a formal planning application. The proposed building ranges from five to nine storeys in height and provides 330 student bedrooms. It is intended for students attending the nearby UWE Frenchay Campus and, once complete, would be managed by the university.
